Research Methods
Competitor Analysis
I analyzed competitors like Instagram Live and YouTube Live to understand their approach to live music and interactive features. This helped identify gaps and opportunities to make Spotify’s Live Jam Sessions unique and appealing.
Secondary Research
I found that 67% of live music viewers prefer features that enhance interaction, such as comments and reactions, while 45% express interest in discovering more about their favorite artist.
Market Trends
I examined trends in the entertainment and music streaming industries, such as the rise of virtual events and interactive experiences. These trends confirmed the demand for live music features and validated the potential for Spotify Live Jam Sessions.
User Interview Findings
Live Performances
Users were excited about the concept of Live Jam Sessions, where they can experience real-time performances from their favorite artists. This feature brings the energy and excitement of live music directly to Spotify, creating a more interactive and engaging platform for fans.
Add song to playlist
Users loved the ability to add the song currently being played during a live session directly to their playlists. This feature offers convenience and enhances personalization, allowing them to seamlessly save music they discover in real-time.
Learn more about the artist
When users scroll down during a live session, they can access additional information about the artist, such as their biography, discography, fun facts, and similar music. This feature provides a deeper connection to the artist and enriches the live music experience.
Define
User Persona
After conducting research and interviews, I created "Chase Miller," a 28-year-old music enthusiast who values interactive and immersive live performances. Chase's desire for features like interacting with the artist and other fans, playlist integration, and artist insights inspired the development of Spotify Live Jam Sessions. His preferences shaped the feature to provide a seamless and engaging live music experience.

Design
Low-fidelity Wireframes
To start the design process, I created paper lo-fi wireframes to shape my ideas, focusing on the user persona and user flow. These wireframes outline a simple, intuitive structure with key features like discovering live performances and adding songs to playlists, ensuring a user-friendly experience before moving to hi-fi designs.
High-fidelity Wireframes
For my hi-fi wireframes, I incorporated colors, typography, and graphics to enhance engagement. I fine-tuned the layout for a visually appealing, cohesive design, aligning with the user persona and Spotify’s brand identity. The wireframes now include realistic elements like buttons, icons, and images, giving Live Jam Sessions a polished yet intuitive experience.
Prototype
Prototyping
During prototyping, I added transitions and interactions to enhance the Live Jam Sessions feature. I made the logo and navigation sticky and ensured smooth scrolling. After several adjustments, I perfected the jump scroll interaction (arrow next to "Add Song") for a seamless user experience.

Usability Testing
During usability testing with five participants, feedback revealed that the buttons at the bottom were confusing. Users weren’t sure of their purpose or what step/page they were on due to the number of buttons. This highlighted the need for clearer labels and a progress tracker to improve navigation.
Iterations
During usability testing with five participants, I received feedback on the the home page that the play icon caused confusion, as users weren't sure if they were viewing a live performance or a video. To address this, I removed the play icon and added indicators for "Live" and the number of viewers on the live performance screen for clarity.
For the live jam session page, users mentioned that the top of the screen felt cluttered, and they were unsure how to exit because there was no back button. To resolve this, I moved the "Add to Playlist" feature to the bottom and introduced a scroll-down option to reveal more artist information, song fun fact, and songs similar to the current song being played.
